Stop guessing your rates

Survey data shows many freelancers earn six figures, yet almost none feel confident pricing their work.

You're Not Stuck. You Just Don't Have a Plan.

You have more pricing power than you think, and you are leaving money on the table if you keep guessing. A new survey of freelance designers found nearly a third earn six figures, and 8 percent clear more than 200,000 a year, yet only 12 percent feel very confident about pricing their work.

At the same time, AI keeps shifting how projects start and what clients expect, which makes pricing even more complicated. Many creators use AI, a lot of people worry it hurts creative quality, and companies are still using AI to kick off projects, so demand for freelance talent looks more stable than you might fear.

Translation: clients still need skilled creators, but you need a clearer pricing plan. Below are three focused moves you can make this week to stop undercharging, protect profit, and keep your craft central.

01

Pricing

Stop guessing, start framing

If nearly a third of peers are hitting six figures, pricing is not a secret. The problem is confidence. Less than one in eight freelancers said they are very confident setting prices in the survey, and almost half say they sometimes feel afraid to ask for higher rates.

Fix the fear with structure. Pick three clear offers for typical client needs. Give each an outcome and a timeline, and price them for profit not just cost. Practice the conversation you will have with clients, and make the first number you say a reference point, not an opening bid.

Track the proposals you send and the replies you get. When clients accept faster than they should, raise your next price. When they push back, learn where they push and refine your value pitch.

Try this: This week, create three packaged offers with clear outcomes and a reference price for each.

02

AI and quality

Put craft on the invoice

AI is everywhere in the creative pipeline. The same research shows most creators use AI at least sometimes, and a majority worry it hurts creative quality. At the public level trust in AI answers is low, and audiences are growing wary of low effort AI content, which has prompted platforms to tighten rules and detection for cheap AI substitutes.

That is an opportunity. When you document and show the human choices you made, you make your work harder to replace. Add a short process note to proposals and deliverables that explains the human decisions behind the results. Charge for research, iterations, and creative direction as discrete line items.

Use AI where it speeds things up, but bill for the human craft that shapes it into a client ready product. Clients care about predictability and ownership more than whether AI touched a rough draft.

Try this: This week, add a one paragraph process note to your next proposal that explains the human decisions you will make.

03

Taxes

Protect profit before December 31

Tax moves matter now. Year round planning is not optional if you want to keep options later. Certain steps must exist by year end to preserve tax choices, for example forming a business entity or opening a solo retirement account even if you do not make contributions yet, and missed estimated payments create penalties that accrue quarter by quarter.

If you earn outside the U S there are treaty rules and traps. The U S has tax treaties with over 60 countries that can reduce withholding on dividends, interest, and royalties, but a mistake on residency or creating a taxable permanent establishment can create surprise liabilities, and certain foreign entity structures trigger complex reporting forms.

If you have not done basic year end checks, do them now. A catch up estimated tax payment reduces future penalty accrual, and establishing the right structure by December 31 preserves later deductions and retirement contribution options.

Try this: This week, schedule a 30 minute check in with your tax advisor and confirm whether any entity or retirement account needs to exist by December 31.

Moving with Intentionality: The Key to Success

Cody and JB walk through why planning matters, and how clear purpose helps you move with intention. In a fast paced world it is easy to drift, so they remind listeners that passion alone is not enough. Structure, clarity, and repeatable systems turn good intentions into progress.

  • The Seven Ps of Planning, a phrase Cody shares from his father, stands for prior proper planning prevents piss poor performance, a concise reminder that having a plan matters.
  • Finding your destination, JB urges people to put pen to paper and define goals. He uses Google Maps as a metaphor, you need an address to reach a destination.
  • The trap of multimillionaire mindset, Cody warns that fixating on lofty outcomes can distract from present steps. Dreaming big is fine, but you still must act on the immediate, practical work.
  • Structure and organization matter, both hosts note many people prefer chaos. JB pushes for duplication, make processes someone else can follow, and ensure you can do the work reliably every day.
  • Intentionality is the through line, whether you use tools or habits. Cody and JB agree that everything works better with a plan, and that slowing down to focus on the why improves outcomes.
When you go into places and you put in Google Maps, you need to know the address to reach your destination.
If we don't put that pen to paper... then it's not gonna work.
Make something duplicatable. If you can't do it every day, it's not good.
Take your time, be intentional, there's no rush.

Takeaway, success blends purpose with practice. Cody and JB encourage you to slow down enough to name your goals, build simple repeatable steps, and use structure to align others to your vision. For a deeper dive, listen to the full episode.
